Celebrations of Unity: How Saudi Arabia Marked Its First National Days

On September 23, 1932 King Abdulaziz issued Royal Order No. 2716 formally uniting the country under the name Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was the start of a new state and a moment of unification that led to massive celebrations across towns villages and tribes it was more than just an administrative act.

As Saudis from all across the country came together to commemorate the birth of a common national identity, the early National Day festivities were filled with strong feelings of pride, loyalty, and unity.
In the days following the decree messages flooded into Riyadh from across the Kingdom. Governors tribal leaders, and citizens sent telegrams filled with joy and pledges of loyalty to the new name and its ruler. The official gazette Um Al-Qura documented these heartfelt message highlighting how deeply the decree resonated not only with political figures but also with the ordinary people of
longing for a symbol of unity.

IPrince Saud bin Abdulaziz wrote to his brother Prince Faisal from the capital detailing the festivities. To commemorate the momentous pronouncement a large assemblage of townsfolk, princes, and tribal chiefs came together. Speeches hailed the time as a national turning point and poetry lauding the unification was delivered. The celebrations spread outside the government buildings into the streets where people showed their pride and happiness as a group.
