Australian ‘Daesh Brides’ Reportedly Escape from Syria

Two Australian women linked to Daesh militants have secretly made their way out of Syria with their four children and returned home, Australian authorities confirmed on Friday. Officials said the group was detained in Lebanon after leaving Syria because they lacked proper travel documents. However, they were later issued Australian passports by government agencies, allowing them to return.

A spokesperson clarified that the Australian government is not actively repatriating or assisting people still held in Syrian camps for suspected ties to Daesh fighters. “Our agencies have been monitoring these individuals for some time,” the spokesperson said, adding that authorities were confident security measures were in place to ensure community safety if such individuals returned independently.

In 2023, another Australian woman, Mariam Raad, was brought back from a Syrian detention camp and later faced court over alleged links to her late husband, a Daesh member. She had been repatriated the previous year as part of a humanitarian mission that rescued several women and children from the Al-Hol and Roj camps. Many of those women claimed they were deceived or coerced into traveling to Syria with their husbands.
