France Criticizes US Military Operations in Caribbean as Breach of International Law

Canada’s Niagara-on-the-Lake: French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated on Tuesday that France is concerned about US military actions in the Caribbean since they are against international law. At least 76 individuals have died as a result of the US military’s at least 19 strikes against suspected drug vessels in the Caribbean and off the Pacific coasts of Latin America.

On the fringes of the Group of Seven foreign ministers’ summit in Canada, Barrot stated, We have observed with concern the military operations in the Caribbean region, because they violate international law and because France has an impact in that region through its overseas areas, where more than a million of our compatriots reside. As a result, they can be impacted by the instability brought on by any escalation, which is certainly something we want to prevent.

In addition to the eight warships, a nuclear submarine, and F-35 planes already in the Caribbean, US officials announced on Tuesday that the Gerald Ford, the largest aircraft carrier in the world, has entered the area. Nicolas Maduro, the president of Venezuela, has frequently claimed that the US buildup is intended to remove him from office.
