Iraq’s IRBIL In Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region, a drone attack on Wednesday targeted an Emirati-owned gas complex, cutting off the gas supply to the area’s power plants, according to local authorities. According to a statement from the area natural resources and electrical authority, “a drone attacked the Khor Mor gas field facility at 11:30 p.m. (2030 GMT), cutting off all gas supplies to power plants.”
AFP correspondents reported power outages throughout Kurdistan, notably in Sulaimaniyah. The majority of the electricity in the Kurdistan area comes from the Khor Mor gas field, which is located between Kirkuk and Sulaimaniyah.
The attack caused 2,600 megawatts of electricity to be lost, damaging 80% of the region’s power grid, according to Omed Ahmed, spokesperson for the regional electrical administration. To investigate the attack and resume operations, authorities said they were working with Dana Gas, a company based in the United Arab Emirates. The attack “targeted gas storage tanks, causing a major explosion and large fire, a local security source told AFP. The incident, which set fire to a large storage tank, did not result in any injuries, according to Iraq’s Joint Operations Command, which oversees military and security services.
