JERUSALEM: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is being accused of avoiding responsibility for the shortcomings that led to the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, which is causing tension between Israel’s top military and political officials.
Weekly demonstrations calling for the return of captives and criticizing Netanyahu’s leadership of the ensuing two-year conflict in Gaza became a symbol of the rage simmering in some sections of Israeli society over how the attack and its aftermath have been handled. In vain, a large portion of the Israeli public has been demanding an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the 2023 Hamas attack, which claimed 1,221 lives.
According to polls, over 70% of Israelis support the creation of a state commission of investigation, which has previously been established to look into significant state-level shortcomings. Prime Minister Golda Meir resigned in June 1974 as a result of the one created during the Arab-Israeli War in October 1973.
The government has the authority to establish a commission, but the president of the Supreme Court must appoint its members. The court has been accused of political bias by Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition administration.
