How Reduced Global Funding Is Affecting Syrian Refugee Return Rates

Geneva: Since Bashar Assad’s regime fell a year ago, more than 3 million Syrians have returned home, but a drop in international financing may discourage others, the UN refugee agency said on Monday. After the civil war that concluded with Assad’s overthrow, about 1.2 million refugees and 1.9 million internally displaced persons returned home, but millions more have yet to do so, according to UNHCR.

According to the agency, far more assistance was required to guarantee that the trend would continue. UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi stated, “Syrians are ready to rebuild; the question is whether the world is ready to help them do it.” There are still more than 5 million refugees living outside of Syria, primarily in Jordan and Lebanon.

Last week, Grandi warned donors in Geneva that there was a chance the returning Syrians would even change their minds and return to their host countries. The risk of (reversals) is very real unless we step up broader efforts, but returns continue in fairly large numbers,” he stated.

According to UN figures, 29% of Syria’s $3.19 billion humanitarian response has been supported this year, despite significant reductions in foreign aid being made by countries such as the United States and others. As humanitarian funds go before national systems can take over, the World Health Organization observes a gap.
