French Journalist in Algeria Seeks Justice Through Supreme Court Appeal

ALGIERS According to his attorneys on Sunday, French journalist Christophe Gleizes, who was given a seven-year prison sentence in Algeria on terror-related accusations, has filed an appeal with the nation’s highest court, requesting a fresh trial.

His French attorney, Emmanuel Daoud, told AFP in a message that “Christophe Gleizes registered an appeal at (the court of) Cassation” on Sunday, the filing deadline, but he would not say further. Amirouche Bakouri, Gleizes’ Algerian attorney, posted a similar statement on Facebook. The sportswriter was initially found guilty in June of “glorifying terrorism,” and earlier this month an Algerian appeals court maintained his seven-year prison sentence.

After visiting Tizi Ouzou in the Kabylia region of northeastern Algeria, which is home to the Amazigh Kabyle people, to write about Jeunesse Sportive de Kabylie, the nation’s most decorated football team, Gleizes was arrested in May 2024.

He had met in Paris in 2021 with the leader of the Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylie (MAK), a foreign organization that Algiers had earlier that year classified as terrorist. Gleizes requested the court’s pardon for his “journalistic mistakes” during this month’s appeal session, claiming he was unaware that the MAK had been designated as a terrorist group.
