Mozambique Flood Crisis: Governor Confirms 300,000+ People Displaced

MAPUTO, Mozambique: Flooding in a Mozambican province has displaced nearly 300,000 people, the province’s governor said on Monday. Authorities had already announced that almost 40% of Gaza province had been swamped by floodwaters following weeks of severe rain in regions of southern Africa.

Mozambican President Daniel Chapo has canceled his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, due to significant flooding in the country’s central and southern regions, according to the state-run daily Noticias.

Gaza Governor Margarida Mapandzene Chongo reported that approximately 327,000 people were being accommodated in dozens of temporary shelters, including schools and churches. They had fled or been evacuated from flood-prone districts of the southern province, which has a population of over 1.4 million.

Humanitarian agencies warned earlier this month that the bad weather in Mozambique would affect roughly 200,000 people, but that figure looks to have been exceeded. Inocencio Impissa, a Cabinet minister and official spokesperson, stated that almost 600,000 people had been affected in Gaza and surrounding Maputo districts.

According to Chongo, authorities are now urging everyone to evacuate the lower areas of Gaza’s province capital of Xai-Xai as additional flooding threatens the city of approximately 115,000 people, which is located near to the Limpopo River. Floodwater inundated parts of Xai-Xai, turning streets into rivers, according to videos posted on the city’s official Facebook page.
