Four Killed as Rare Heavy Rains Trigger Floods Across Tunisia

TUNIS: Four people have died as a result of flooding in Tunisia, according to authorities on Tuesday. Following the country’s greatest rainfall in over 70 years, schools and businesses were forced to close.

According to Khalil Mechri, a civil defense spokesperson, two people were swept away by floodwaters, while a woman drowned in her home.” All four deaths took place in Moknine, in the Monastir governorate of the North African nation.

The head of forecasting at the National Institute of Meteorology (INM), Abderazak Rahal, told AFP that it had not rained that much in some parts of Tunisia since 1950. Rahal stated, “We have recorded exceptional amounts of rainfall for the month of January,” with the hardest-hit areas being Monastir, Nabeul, and greater Tunis.

Due to the weather, authorities announced that classes at public and private institutions and universities in 15 of the 24 governorates in the nation will be suspended on Wednesday. On social media, startling pictures of automobiles stuck in water-filled streets went viral.

Mostafa Riyahi, a resident of Tunis, told AFP on Tuesday that “it hasn’t stopped raining since last night.” I didn’t notice it at first because there were only a few minor leaks. However, my feet were submerged in water as I got out of bed.
