On Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio applauded Iraq’s initiative to jail Daesh members in safe facilities. He also urged governments to repatriate their citizens to face punishment. The United States welcomes the Government of Iraq’s initiative to detain Daesh terrorists in secure facilities in Iraq, following recent instability in northeast Syria,” Rubio stated in a news release. “Non-Iraqi terrorists will be in Iraq temporarily; the United States urges countries to take responsibility and repatriate their citizens in these facilities to face justice”
The US military aims to relocate up to 7,000 detainees from Syria. The United Nations has taken over supervision of Daesh-affiliated camps in Syria, sheltering tens of thousands of women and children, following the fall of Kurdish-led troops that had previously secured them.
As the Kurdish forces retreat, Iraq has began accepting detainees transferred from Syrian prisons and has requested assistance from other countries. Rubio emphasized the importance of a long-term framework to prevent a revival of Daesh on Thursday, including proper burden-sharing among Coalition members.
More than 10,000 Daesh members, as well as tens of thousands of women and children affiliated with them, have been kept for years in a dozen jails and detention centers in northeast Syria, guarded by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
