U.S. officials said on Thursday that despite war and trade concerns, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will visit G20 colleagues next week and will increase efforts to economically isolate Iran. On Monday and Tuesday, top officials from the Group of 20 main economies’ financial ministries and central banks will gather in picturesque Asheville, North Carolina, for a summit.
Their discussions are the inaugural of multiple important ministerial gatherings scheduled for this year, paving the way for a G20 summit that President Trump will hold in Florida in December. As the United States increases pressure on Iran in the midst of the Middle East war, a Treasury official told reporters that US officials will emphasize to G20 countries the necessity of complying with US sanctions in Asheville.
In bilateral encounters, the official hinted that Bessent will make direct pleas to counterparts. However, they refrained from disclosing the names of the people he was planned to meet with or whether China was one of them.
Nineteen member states make up the G20, in addition to the EU and the AU. As a means of bolstering international monetary and economic stability, it was set up during the Asian financial crisis of 1997–1998. However, while the United States was president, South Africa was not invited to the G20, and Poland was invited instead. Concerns like excess industrial capacity, weak economic growth, and the lack of dependable supply chains for essential commodities like energy will be among the issues US leaders address next week.
