Rescuers in Nepal and China were still battling Saturday (August 29, 2026) to find thousands of missing individuals days after a catastrophic, tsunami-like wall of water and debris rushed through the Himalayan region, burying settlements. Nepal’s Foreign Minister stated to Reuters that the government requires foreign assistance in specialized and technical sectors where it lacks knowledge following the disastrous floods.
On Friday (August 28, 2026), emergency personnel reported recovering 586 bodies, bringing the total number of missing to just above 2,400. As the bodies of those swept away by the Bhotekoshi flood are dumped downstream, hospitals are straining to find storage and identification facilities. The Himalayan nation only has the ability to retain approximately 350 dead in morgues across the country, resulting in a dearth of space to store the bodies until their families identify and claim them.
The bodies of victims swept away by floodwaters from Rasuwa and Nuwakparasi are being retrieved in Nuwakot and downstream as far as Chitwan, Tanahun, Nawalparasi, and low-lying places. Some of the deceased were swept downstream as far as India. The fresh estimates came as Nepal’s disaster management agency added 933 hydropower workers to a missing persons list that already included trekkers and pilgrims to Tibet’s sacred Mount Kailash.
