The UN finds itself at the center of a verbal battle over the definition of women’s rights following warnings of an increase in attacks on women and gender rights worldwide.
Volker Turk, the head of UN rights, has long issued warnings about “systematic” attempts to deny women their hard-won rights.
In his address to the UN Human Rights Council last week, he emphasized severe situations such as those in Afghanistan and Iran but cautioned that there was a global backlash.
He declared, “No nation is immune from regression in women’s rights,” and he denounced the “continuous exclusion and discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation.”
Meanwhile, the UN has developed as a crucial front in the conflict.
The UN system’s resolutions and texts that had long been undisputed about women’s rights, sexual orientation, and gender identity are being gradually removed, according to diplomats.
A woman diplomat stationed in Geneva, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “What we’re seeing is a concerted effort to push back on issues related to gender and sexual orientation and gender identity in… the work of international organizations in Geneva broadly.”
The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex Association’s (ILGA) program director, Gurchaten Sandhu, spoke of the “coordinated efforts” of many players “to push back on equality.”
He told AFP that any mention of gender in UN literature “raises a heightened sense of paranoia.”
