JEDDAH: In an effort to boost decarbonisation efforts in the transportation industry and beyond, Toyota Motor Corp. and two local organisations have partnered to advance research on hydrogen fuel cells in Saudi Arabia.
In order to use greener energy solutions, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology and Abdul Latif Jameel Motors have partnered strategically with the Japanese company.
At the centre of this project is KAUST, which established a state-of-the-art lab within its Clean Energy and Research Platform by purchasing proton electrolyte membrane fuel cell modules from Toyota.
According to a statement from KAUST, this facility is well-positioned to be a key component of the Kingdom’s hydrogen innovation initiatives, especially when it comes to customising fuel cells for the area’s unique environmental circumstances.
With competitive domestic and export prices, Saudi Arabia hopes to supply about 2.9 million tonnes of hydrogen by 2030. This partnership is in line with the Kingdom’s goal of lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reaching net zero emissions by 2060.
The KAUST chemical engineering professor Mani Sarathy expressed his excitement about working with TMC and Abdul Latif Jameel Motors to promote the use of hydrogen fuel cell technology in Saudi Arabia.
