As of Tuesday, the permanent representative of Saudi Arabia to the UN stated, “The world order is in one of the most dangerous phases it has experienced since the end of the Cold War.”
Abdulaziz Alwasil attributed this to “some major powers” who prioritized their own agendas over the fundamental values upon which the UN was established. As a result, the UN’s agencies and mechanisms are “shackled with procedures and rules that allow a small number of states to control the destiny of helpless peoples and countries,” making it impossible for the organization to fulfill its obligations.
“The blatant violations being perpetrated against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip are a prime example of the inaction of the current global order and the failure of its most important body, tasked with the maintenance of international peace and security, to fulfill the hopes that have been pinned on it,” Alwasil said during a Security Council meeting.
The world is now witnessing “the worst human catastrophe of our modern history,” he continued, because of this, “the Israeli war machine has killed and injured thousands of Palestinians without accountability or deterrent.”
According to Alwasil, there have been an increasing number of crises around the world in recent years, making it more crucial than ever to create a new multilateral system that is more equitable, coherent, and equipped with more potent tools to support the establishment of peace and security.
