A UN Leader Appeals For Sudan's "Unending Suffering" Following Slaughter of Civilians

The city of New York: Amidst brutal clashes and civilian deaths in Al-Fasher, a strategically important city in the southwest of the country, the UN secretary-general has issued a warning about the “increasingly catastrophic” situation in Sudan. Volker Turk, the UN’s chief for human rights, stated that the “horror unfolding” in Sudan “knows no bounds.” The United Nations stated Thursday that at least 542 people had been murdered in North Darfur State, which has its capital at Al-Fasher, in the last three weeks, but cautioned that the actual death toll was likely “much higher.”

The horrific conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has turned Darfur into a hotspot. Following an onslaught by government troops, the latter retreated from the nation’s capital, Khartoum, last month. Tens of thousands of people have died in the civil war that began in 2023, and it has resulted in the worst food and displacement catastrophe in history.

In a statement released on Wednesday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced the “appalling” circumstances in Sudan and emphasised the fatal assaults on two Al-Fasher refugee camps. “Hundreds of civilians, including humanitarian workers, were reportedly killed in the massacres that took place at the famine-stricken Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps two weeks ago,” he stated.
