According to an Official, Syria Needs to Address Complaints and Bolster the rule of law in Order to Stop Hate Speech

DAMASCUS: A senior official at the National Commission for Transitional Justice stated on Wednesday that in order to stop hate speech and avoid social splits, Syria must address public complaints and bolster the rule of law. Slogans and counter-rhetoric by themselves will not stop animosity between social groups, Hassan Jubran, the commission’s head of national reconciliation, told SANA.

According to him, feelings of unfairness and unresolved complaints may cause some people to believe that others are either unwilling to assist them or complicit in their misery, which fosters an atmosphere that is conducive to hate speech.

He continued, Improving governance and government performance would help address those concerns and reduce tensions.” According to Jubran, dispelling contentious narratives required openness, fact-finding, and access to information

He cautioned that, especially on social media, where emotionally charged assertions may spread without proof or helpful solutions, anything that is portrayed as criticism may occasionally amount to intentional instigation or misinformation. He advocated greater public involvement in decision-making while defending the rights to free speech and access to information.
