ALGIERS: In anticipation of a significant storm, Algeria announced on Tuesday that it will be closing schools in the great majority of its regions for the next two days. On Wednesday, winds in areas covering the majority of the North African nation, including the capital Algiers, are predicted to reach 120 kilometers per hour (74 miles per hour).
In response to the “urgent” storm alert, classes were suspended in 52 of Algeria’s 69 provinces, according to a statement from the ministry of education. The Algerian civil defense asked citizens to be extremely cautious, to prepare “lighting that does not rely on electricity,” to avoid windows and power poles, and to travel only when absolutely necessary.
Two individuals, including a toddler, died in Algeria last week due to extreme weather, according to the civil defense. Last week, severe rains and flooding caused entire neighborhoods in Relizane, Algiers, and Tipaza to flood, cutting off many highways.
A number of individuals were reported dead in flooding and at sea in neighboring Tunisia due to heavy weather. The Algerian civil defense asked citizens to be extremely cautious, to prepare “lighting that does not rely on electricity,” to avoid windows and power poles, and to travel only when absolutely necessary.
