An AI System Created by a Saudi Researcher Helps Individuals Comprehend Sign Language

CHICAGO: An artificial intelligence scholar from Saudi Arabia realised that technology may help them communicate better with the world while working as a teacher with the deaf and hard-of-hearing population.

According to Bader Alsharif, who has worked with individuals with hearing impairments for over ten and a half years, he has realised that the public’s ignorance of sign language is one of the biggest obstacles they encounter. He came to the realisation that removing this obstacle will enhance communication within this group and provide the general public a greater understanding of the lives of individuals who depend on signing.

The 39-year-old told Arab News, “I chose to concentrate on sign language and AI because of my close work with students over the past 16 years.” “I saw the communication difficulties they encounter, particularly when those around them are not familiar with sign language. “I was moved by that and felt compelled to assist. I thus came to the conclusion that we could develop a clever system that can recognise sign language in real time and convert it into English by utilising my experience in computer engineering and the capabilities of artificial intelligence.
