When the body of his colleague Shireen Abu Akleh arrived at Ibn Sina Hospital in the occupied West Bank, medical personnel had to restrain Palestinian journalist Ali al-Samoudi while responding to his bullet wound.
I was able to see Shireen sleeping beside me. The situation was unbelievable to me. I began to yell and made an effort to reach her. Al-Samoudi told Al Jazeera about the events on May 11, 2022, saying, “They didn’t let me.
Earlier that day, Israeli soldiers had shot al-Samoudi in the back before firing another bullet that claimed the life of Abu Akleh, a United States citizen and veteran Al Jazeera correspondent who was renowned across the Arab world. The fourth anniversary of Abu Akleh’s murder is on Monday.
Al Jazeera condemned the incident as a “cold blood” assassination as soon as it happened. Since then, Israel has assassinated over ten US nationals and hundreds of journalists in Gaza, Lebanon, and the West Bank. No arrests or charges have resulted from any of the homicides, including the Abu Akleh case. Advocates say Washington’s failure to ensure accountability for the Al Jazeera correspondent set the stage for greater Israeli abuses against the press.
