Can Saudi Arabia Lead the Fight Against AI Deepfakes?

Deepfake technology which uses artificial intelligence to generate hyper-realistic videos and images that imitate real people or events is the rapidly reshaping the digital world. Once seen as entertaining experiments and deepfakes have evolved into the powerful tools that can spread misinformation manipulate public opinion and erode confidence in news and media sources. As the technology becomes more advanced in distinguishing real content from the fabricated media has become increasingly challenging exposing societies to deception and confusion.

The consequences of this technology were clearly visible in March 2022, during the early stages of the Russia-Ukraine war. A video circulated online seemed to show Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy telling his military to surrender. The footage, which appeared convincing at first, was soon identified by fact-checkers as a deepfake  a product of artificial intelligence distributed through hacked news platforms and social media accounts.

Although the hoax was swiftly debunked, it had already reached millions briefly shaking the world’s confidence in what was real. The incident became one of the earliest examples of synthetic media being used as a weapon during wartime signaling a new era of digital disinformation.
