The UN Security Council is convening an emergency meeting today, Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. New York time (1900 GMT), to address Israel’s recent airstrike in Doha, Qatar, which targeted Hamas officials. The session was requested by Algeria and Pakistan, among other nations, in response to the attack that resulted in six fatalities, including a Qatari security officer, and heightened regional tensions.
The Israeli strike, which occurred on September 9, 2025, targeted a residential compound in Doha’s Leqtaifiya district, where senior Hamas leaders were reportedly meeting to discuss a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal for Gaza. While the top leadership survived, the attack killed five individuals, including the son of Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya.
The international community has widely condemned the strike. UN Secretary-General António Guterres labeled it a “flagrant violation” of Qatar’s sovereignty, emphasizing the country’s role in mediating ceasefire efforts. Qatar itself denounced the attack as a breach of international law, and other nations, including the United States, expressed concerns over the timing and impact on peace negotiations.
