PALM BEACH, United States: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was in a New York jail Saturday, hours after American special forces apprehended and flew him out of his country, which Donald Trump predicted would be effectively under US authority. The declaration by the US president came after a quick pre-dawn attack in which commandos apprehended Maduro and his wife while air strikes pummeled Caracas and surrounding areas.
A US government jet transporting Maduro landed at a military post just after nightfall, and he was helicoptered to New York City, where the pair was scheduled to face drug trafficking and weapons charges.
The White House shared a video on X of Maduro, handcuffed and wearing sandals, being escorted by federal officers through a US Drug Enforcement Administration facility in New York. “Good night and happy new year,” the 63-year-old socialist is heard saying in English.
Regardless of whether the dangerous raid was successful, what happens next is undetermined. Trump stated that he was “designating people” from his cabinet to be in control in Venezuela, but provided no further information. In another surprise, Trump hinted that US soldiers could be deployed, stating that Washington is “not afraid of boots on the ground.
