FBI Investigates Former Counterterrorism Official Over Alleged Classified Leak

WASHINGTON: According to a person familiar with the situation on Wednesday, the FBI is looking into whether Joe Kent, who resigned this week as a top counterterrorism official in protest of the Iran war, unlawfully released secret material.

The individual, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing FBI investigation, stated that the investigation comes before Kent’s retirement on Tuesday from his position as director of the US government’s National Counterterrorism Center.

However, it coincides with the Justice Department’s several investigations over the past year of political opponents of President Donald Trump, such as New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey. Prosecutors have frequently had difficulty obtaining indictments in the first place or making charges stick in the face of judicial rejections.

There was no immediate information available regarding the scope of the probe, which was initially reported by Semafor. In a statement on X, Kent announced his resignation from the government, citing his doubts about the rationale behind military operations in Iran and stating that he “cannot in good conscience” support the war against Iran.
