Five People are Detained by Saudi Officials in Relation to Various Drug Trafficking Charges

The Saudi Press Agency said on Friday that five individuals were detained by Saudi officials on suspicion of drug trafficking charges. In separate operations, the authorities also seized amphetamine tablets and other prohibited narcotics in addition to a significant amount of hashish and the narcotic plant qat.

During one operation, agents of the General Directorate of Narcotics Control confiscated 35 kilograms of hashish, 12,260 amphetamine tablets, and 24,991 prescription tablets. They also arrested three Egyptian residents living in Riyadh.

The drugs directorate apprehended an Ethiopian national who was selling hashish and breaking the Kingdom’s border security measures in the southwestern region of Al-Baha.

Agents tasked with combating drug abuse detained a citizen in the northern region of Al-Jouf for distributing amphetamine pills.

According to SPA, all five of the detained individuals have been referred to the Public Prosecution.

Separate attempts to import qat from Yemen were foiled by Border Guard land patrols in the southwest province of Jazan, including 160 kg in the governorate of Al-Aridhah and 114 kg in the governorate of Farasan, according to SPA. In both situations, there was no mention of an arrest.

Anti-drug officials in the Riyadh region found 4.7 million Captagon tablets, worth up to $117.5 million on the black market, in one of the largest drug busts. The tablets were discovered concealed within a shipment of concrete blocks, according to the General Directorate of Narcotics Control.
