Germany’s Magdeburg Christmas market saw a car-ramming attack that left at least five people dead and over 200 injured, according to authorities. A Saudi man was reportedly taken into custody on suspicion of crashing his vehicle into the throng.
The attack on Friday night on market patrons celebrating the pre-Christmas season coincides with a heated discussion about migration and security during Germany’s election campaign, in which the extreme right is leading the polls.
When Chancellor Olaf Scholz planted a white rose at a church in the center city, which was formerly part of East Germany, he observed, “What a terrible act it is to injure and kill so many people there with such brutality.”
He said, “We now know that more than 200 people have been hurt.” “We must be very concerned about nearly 40 people who are seriously injured.” A 50-year-old Saudi physician who has resided in Germany for nearly 20 years is being investigated by German police in relation to the car-ramming. Overnight, police searched his house. Police have not yet identified the suspect, and the motive is yet unknown. The German media has referred to him as Taleb A. After the attacker posted extremist beliefs that endangered peace and security on his personal X account, Saudi Arabia alerted German police about him, a Saudi source told Reuters.
