MANILA: Rodrigo Duterte, the former president, was arrested on Tuesday after the Philippine government said that it had obtained a warrant from the International Criminal Court about his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity connected to the nation’s brutal “war on drugs.” Since 2016, the ICC has been looking into Duterte’s administration’s murderous anti-drug campaign, which, according to official statistics, killed over 6,000 Filipinos during the former president’s six-year term. However, according to ICC prosecutors, security forces may have killed up to 30,000 people extrajudicially.
After returning from a vacation to Hong Kong, he was taken into custody at Manila’s main airport, according to a statement from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration. The Presidential Communications Office stated, “Interpol Manila received the official copy of the arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court earlier this morning.” “The ICC notification for an arrest warrant against the former president for crimes against humanity was presented by the prosecutor general upon his arrival. He is currently being held by the authorities.
After more than 20 years as mayor of Davao, the country’s second-largest city, where he allegedly oversaw a deadly anti-drug operation with impunity, Duterte ran for president of the Philippines in 2016 on a pledge to end illegal drugs. International censure followed the subsequent widespread campaign.
