Following Discussions on Peace Initiatives in Moscow, Turkiye's Foreign Minister Will Travel to Kyiv

ANKARA: According to a Turkish Foreign Ministry source on Wednesday, Turkey’s foreign minister would visit Kyiv for two days on Thursday after speaking in Moscow earlier this week on attempts to bring an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin and senior Russian officials, including Moscow’s main negotiator during negotiations earlier this month in Istanbul to end the three-year conflict, met with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Moscow on Monday and Tuesday.

According to the source, Fidan is scheduled to meet with Kyiv’s defence minister Rustem Umerov, who is also Kyiv’s chief negotiator with Russia, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, and his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha. According to the source, Fidan will reiterate his offer to hold additional peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine during the discussions.

According to the source, Putin would “draw attention to the growing negative consequences of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, highlighting the necessity of ending the conflict diplomatically and achieving a just and sustainable peace.” Fidan will also emphasise Turkiye’s willingness to participate in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction while talking about bilateral cooperation in the areas of commerce, energy, defence, and security.

Following the first direct meeting between the parties since March 2022, also in Istanbul, earlier this month, Russia is coming under mounting pressure to agree to a ceasefire, and Ankara has stated time and again that the parties must continue their negotiations.
