Alcoa Fined $36 Million for Illegal Forest Clearing in Australia: What Happened?

Alcoa, which is located in Pittsburgh, will pay the Australian government $36 million to resolve a claim that the firm “unlawfully” cleared areas of endangered forest without permission between 2019 and 2025.

In the 1960s, the metals giant started mining bauxite, the raw material for aluminium, from under Australia’s Northern Jarrah forest. However, in recent years, its impact has grown, which has led to more scrutiny from regulators and the public.

Senator Murray Watt, Australia’s minister of the environment and water, said that the payment of $55 million Australian dollars settles a long-standing debate over whether Alcoa could be exempt from federal environmental regulations.

Alcoa President and CEO William F. Oplinger stated in a statement, “We are committed to responsible operations and welcome this important step in moving our approvals to a modern assessment process that will give our operations and our people more certainty in the future.” “We’re proud to have been a leading Australian aluminium producer for more than 60 years and to now be helping with the production of critical minerals.
