G7 Loans to Ukraine are Condemned as a "Fraudulent Scheme" by Russia's UK Embassy

LONDON: On Saturday, the Russian embassy in London called Britain’s proposed transfer of over $2 billion ($2.5 billion) to Ukraine, which is supported by frozen Russian assets, a “fraudulent scheme.” As part of a far larger loan from the Group of Seven countries guaranteed by blocked Russian central bank assets, Britain said in October that it would finance Ukraine 2.26 billion pounds to help reconstruct damaged infrastructure and purchase weaponry.

Leaders of the G7 (Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the US) and senior officials from the European Union, which holds the majority of the Russian assets frozen as a result of the conflict, agreed to the loans in July.

The Russian embassy in London posted on social media, “We are closely monitoring UK authorities’ efforts to implement a fraudulent scheme of expropriating incomes from Russian state assets ‘frozen’ in the EU.” According to British Defense Minister John Healey, the funds would only be utilized by Ukraine’s armed forces and might be used to assist in the development of drones that can travel farther than some long-range missiles. “The intricate legislative choreography fails to conceal the illegitimate nature of this arrangement,” the embassy continued.
