Gaza Civilians Fear Collapse of Fragile Ceasefire Agreement

CAIRO: Israeli planes and tanks launched strikes in eastern Gaza on Thursday, Palestinian residents and witnesses reported, occurring just a day after Israel affirmed its commitment to a US-backed ceasefire despite continuing deadly attacks in the region.

Witnesses said Israeli aircraft conducted 10 airstrikes east of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, while tanks shelled areas east of Gaza Cityin the north. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The Israeli military stated the strikes targeted “terrorist infrastructure” threatening its troops in areas it continues to occupy. These attacks test the fragile ceasefire that began on October 10, amid ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas.

Fathi Al-Najjar, a displaced resident in Khan Younis, fears renewed war, saying, We don’t want war. We’ve been displaced for two years and don’t know where to go.” Life in the tent camps remained harsh, with children fetching water and women cooking on traditional ovens.

Mohammed Al-Sheikh remarked on the difficult conditions and ongoing conflict with little hope for peace. Meanwhile, the Israeli military confirmed militants handed two coffins of dead hostages to the Red Cross in Gaza, signalling progress despite ongoing hostilities.
