JEDDAH: At the 40th Space Symposium in Colorado, Saudi Arabia demanded increased international cooperation on technical standards and radio spectrum management in order to increase satellite investment and international cooperation. Senior leaders from prominent companies in the field, including as SpaceX, Amazon’s Project Kuiper, and Iridium, as well as EchoStar, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing, attended the April 7–10 event.
Saudi Arabia’s involvement coincides with its efforts to establish itself as a regional center for connectivity and cloud computing, offering advantageous access to Europe, Asia, and Africa. According to the Saudi Press Agency, CST Governor Mohammed bin Saud Al-Tamimi called for agreement on technical specifications to establish “a stimulating investment environment in the space communications sector” during a high-level panel held by the Kingdom’s Communications, Space and Technology Commission on April 8.
According to SPA, “he also emphasized its role in improving market entry opportunities for all missions, integrating local and international actors more effectively, and adopting technical systems that adhere to specifications and standards, which will result in lower capital and operational costs.” Al-Tamimi reiterated the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s unwavering dedication to assisting global initiatives to develop the space and satellite communications industry. The sector now uses a variety of proprietary, non-standardized technologies, which makes seamless integration difficult, he said.
