Hamas Wants to Renegotiate Disarmament Terms in Trump Proposal

Hamas leaders are seeking changes to key disarmament provisions in US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, a Palestinian source close to the group’s leadership told AFP on Wednesday. According to the source, Hamas negotiators met Tuesday in Doha with officials from Turkey, Egypt, and Qatar to discuss the proposal and are expected to deliver their response within a few days.

Trump’s plan, supported by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, demands an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages by Hamas within 72 hours, the group’s disarmament, and a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

The Palestinian source said Hamas is pushing back against clauses on disarmament and the removal of its leaders and affiliates. The group also seeks international guarantees for a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and assurances against targeted assassinations inside or outside the territory. The talks come weeks after an Israeli strike in Doha killed six Hamas officials who were reviewing an earlier ceasefire initiative.

Another source familiar with the negotiations confirmed there are internal divisions within Hamas over the plan. “One camp insists that unconditional approval is necessary to secure a ceasefire guaranteed by Trump, as long as mediators ensure Israel complies. The other faction wants to press for key amendments,” the source said.
