The Israeli military and emergency services said that a long-range Iranian-made drone struck the heart of Tel Aviv early on Friday morning. The Houthi militia, based in Yemen, claimed responsibility for the incident, which left one man dead and four others injured.
The explosion happened hours after the Israeli military announced it had killed a senior commander of the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in southern Lebanon. Video posted on social media revealed the explosion originated from the sea and did not set off air raid alarms.
Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, the chief spokesperson, stated that the drone, which struck a structure close to the seashore near the US Embassy in Tel Aviv, was determined by the military to be an enhanced Samad-3 model manufactured in Iran.
“We believe it came from Yemen to Tel Aviv,” he stated during a press conference.
Similar to Hezbollah, the Houthis are affiliated with Iran. According to a spokesperson, the group launched a drone attack on Tel Aviv and plans to carry on attacking Israel as a show of support for the Palestinians fighting in Gaza.
The incident, which happened before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trip to Washington the next week, is expected to stoke concerns about additional consequences from the Gaza conflict as the Houthis and other Iranian proxies continue to support Hamas, a militant organization in Palestine.
