Hurricane Erin Triggers Mass Evacuations in North Carolina’s Outer Banks

As Hurricane Erin approached North Carolina’s Outer Banks on Tuesday and threatened to bring with it tropical force winds and raging waves, Holly Andrzejewski had already begun rescheduling her and her family’s first visitors to the Atlantic Inn on Hatteras Island.

Authorities warned the storm may churn up dangerous rip currents and swamp roadways with waves of 15 feet (4.6 meters), so evacuations were ordered on barrier islands along the Carolina coast, including Hatteras, even though the monster storm is forecast to remain offshore.

Less than a week ago, Andrzejewski and her husband bought the island’s oldest inn, a bed and breakfast. In addition to bringing in all of the outdoor furniture by Monday, they ensured that their daughter and her boyfriend, who are the innkeepers, had flashlights, generators, and extra water because they stayed behind to monitor the property.

On Monday, Erin pounded a portion of the Caribbean with wind and rain. Most of the Outer Banks were under tropical storm and surge watches, but forecasters are certain it will curve north and away from the eastern United States.
