NEW DELHI: India commemorated Raj Kapoor’s 100th birthday on Saturday, honoring the renowned actor and filmmaker whose lasting influence continues to influence and inspire Indian cinema.
Known affectionately as the “first showman of Bollywood” and the “greatest showman of Indian cinema,” Kapoor is regarded as one of India’s best and most influential performers and filmmakers. On December 14, 1924, he was born in Peshawar, which is today in Pakistan. His family eventually relocated to Mumbai.
Actor Prithviraj Kapoor’s kid made his acting debut at the age of ten in the Hindi movie “Inquilab,” which was about an earthquake in Bihar. He starred in almost 60 movies and directed over a dozen of them.
Almost forty years after his passing in 1988, Kapoor is still regarded as one of India’s most beloved heroes. This weekend, a retrospective of ten of his classic films will be shown in 40 Indian cities in honor of his natal anniversary.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the “visionary director, actor, and the eternal showman” on Saturday morning in a series of social media postings honoring Kapoor’s birthday, stating that he “was not just a filmmaker but a cultural ambassador who took Indian cinema to the stage.
