Israel Army Chief Pledges to Recover Remains of Officer Killed in 2014 Gaza War

JERUSALEM — Israel’s military chief has vowed to bring back the remains of an officer killed in Gaza more than a decade ago, following reports that Hamas may have located his body during a recent search approved by Israel.

Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir met with the family of Lt. Hadar Goldin, who was killed during the 2014 six-week conflict in Gaza. Since his death, Goldin’s body has been held in Gaza, though Hamas has never officially confirmed his death or possession of his remains.

The chief of the general staff met with the Goldin family and updated them on the details known to the army so far, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement, without disclosing further information. The statement reaffirmed the military’s commitment to retrieving Goldin’s remains and those of all fallen hostages.

Israeli media outlets, including Channel 12, reported that Israel had permitted Hamas and Red Cross teams to conduct a search on Saturday in an area under Israeli control. According to those reports, the search led to the discovery of Goldin’s remains in a tunnel beneath the southern city of Rafah. However, neither Hamas nor the Israeli military has confirmed the claim.
