JERUSALEM: Israel’s military reported that four troops were hurt on Wednesday during an altercation with Palestinian militants in the southern Gaza Strip, where violence between Israel and Hamas has almost stopped due to a ceasefire.
The US-brokered ceasefire which came into force on October 10 remains weak, with both sides accusing one other of breaking the conditions. The Israeli military reported that during an operation in the vicinity of eastern Rafah on Wednesday, soldiers discovered three militants “who emerged from an underground terrorist structure.
An Israeli combat soldier suffered serious injuries during the engagement, while two other combat soldiers and a non-commissioned officer sustained moderate injuries, according to a statement from the IDF. It stated that the soldiers were flown to the hospital for medical care, and their families had been contacted.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hamas of breaking the truce agreement and conveyed his “wishes for a speedy recovery to our heroic soldiers,” according to his office. A security source in Gaza told AFP that at approximately 4pm local time (1400 GMT), powerful artillery shelling took place from occupied vehicles east of Rafah city, together with heavy gunfire from warplanes.
