Israel Launches a Military Operation at Jenin, a City in the West Bank; Four Palestinians are Killed

The Israeli military declared on Friday that it was carrying out counterterrorism operations, including an airstrike in Jenin, a city in the West Bank.

According to Palestinian officials, four individuals died.

According to the IDF, an airstrike in the region had “struck several armed terrorists,” and Israeli soldiers had “encircled a building where terrorists have barricaded themselves in.” The soldiers and terrorists were engaging in combat.

The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed four deaths but did not reveal the victims’ identities. Neither party quickly provided any more information.

The government intends to construct over 5,300 new homes in settlements in the occupied West Bank, according to an Israeli anti-settlement monitoring group, which was the source of the fighting in Jenin, a recognized militant bastion where the army often conducts operations.

The development plans made public by the Peace Now group are an integral aspect of the hard-line government’s policy to fortify Israel’s authority over the West Bank in order to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state in the future. The West Bank, Gaza, and east Jerusalem—regions that Israel took during the 1967 Middle East War—are sought after by the Palestinians for their own sovereign nation.
