Israel’s Cabinet has approved President Donald Trump’s proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas marking a significant step toward ending the two-year conflict that has deeply affected the Middle East.
The agreement, reached after negotiations facilitated by U.S., Egyptian, Qatari, and Turkish mediators, calls for the end of hostilities a partial Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and the exchange of hostages for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners detained by Israel. While the Cabinet’s announcement focused on the outline of this deal important details including Hamas’s future, disarmament demands, and Gaza’s governance remain unresolved. Nonetheless this development brings both sides closer to a conclusion than they have been in months.
The conflict, ignited by Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in more than 67,000 Palestinian deaths and left tens of thousands wounded, with massive destruction and famine in Gaza. At least 1,200 people were killed in the initial assault and 251 taken hostage. Ongoing Israeli strikes and continued violence have compounded the tragedy, but with the Cabinet’s approval a ceasefire and the release of hostages could soon become reality.
