Israeli Minister's Move Regarding West Bank Settlements is Rejected by a Palestinian Official

A top Palestinian official said on Friday that Israel’s finance minister’s initiative to encourage the establishment of additional Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank was an attempt to carry out a “war of genocide” against the Palestinian people.

In reaction to Palestinian actions against Israel globally, Israeli government would likewise impose punitive measures against the Palestinian Authority, according to Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s announcement on Thursday.

Wasel Abu Youssef, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee, responded to a question concerning Smotrich’s statement—which the government had not backed up—by claiming that the settlements were “illegal colonies that violate all international resolutions.”

He told Reuters that “the occupation government’s decisions aim to pursue the war of genocide against our Palestinian people.”

He said that in order to hold Israel accountable for “crimes against our people, and in particular in the Gaza Strip,” the PLO and the Palestinian Authority would keep up their legal pressure.

Israel has denied allegations made by South Africa before the UN Supreme Court that its military action in Gaza is part of a state-sponsored campaign of genocide against the Palestinian people.
