"Lady of Trees" are the Sarawat Mountains' Natural Guardians

The juniper tree, known as the “Lady of Trees” and associated with towering mountains and lush forests in Saudi Arabia, is essential to preserving the delicate balance of terrestrial ecosystems.

According to a recent study by the Saudi Press Agency, these ancient trees have shown to be resilient and essential homes for various wildlife species in the provinces of Taif, Al-Baha, and Asir.

The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification keeps a close eye on the ancient junipers, nurturing them to preserve their longevity and protect the environment.

It is still very important to stop harmful behaviors and promote ongoing education and awareness, particularly in light of the increasing number of visitors to the Makkah region’s Al-Hada and Al-Shafa villages.

The NCVC’s director-general of research and innovation, Dr. Ahmed Al-Ghamdi, underlined the value of the juniper tree and the dangers it faces. This involves the notable deterioration of juniper habitats in the southwest highlands of the Kingdom as a result of climate change and human activity.

Dieback in junipers has resulted from this degradation, as seen by degraded areas with dead trees.

Al-Ghamdi stated that the NCVC is actively engaged in rehabilitation activities despite being a relatively new organization. In keeping with the Saudi Green Initiative’s objective of planting 10 billion trees in the Kingdom, it seeks to address the causes of degradation and increase the amount of juniper trees in forests.
