Leading Arab League Diplomats Debate the Iran-Israel Conflict in Istanbul

ISTANBUL: According to Turkish official news agency Anadolu, which cited diplomatic sources, Arab League foreign ministers convened in Istanbul late Friday to deliberate on the intensifying conflict between Iran and Israel.

On the eve of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) weekend meeting, which was also scheduled to address the air war that was initiated a week ago, the ministers were in the largest city in Turkiye.

In the worst-ever conflict between the two bitter enemies, Israel launched its attack in the small hours of June 13 after claiming Iran was close to obtaining nuclear weapons. Tehran immediately retaliated.

According to the Turkish foreign ministry, some 40 senior diplomats are expected to attend the OIC’s weekend meeting, which will also include a session devoted to talking about the Iran-Israel conflict.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will also attend and speak to the diplomats, the ministry said, after meeting with his counterparts from Britain, France, and Germany in Geneva on Friday.

Araghchi stated on Friday that only if Israel’s “aggression is stopped” will Tehran be willing to “consider diplomacy” once more.  According to Anadolu, the ministers of the Arab League were scheduled to issue a statement after their meeting.
