Lebanon is Disarming Palestinian 0rganizations in Camps for Refugees

Starting with the transfer of weapons from the Burj al-Barajneh camp in Beirut, Lebanon has begun the process of disarming Palestinian organizations in its refugee camps.

The delivery of weaponry to the Lebanese army is the first step in a larger disarmament effort, the prime minister’s office said Thursday. In the upcoming weeks, more handovers at Burj al-Barajneh and other camps around the country are anticipated.

According to a Fatah official who spoke to the Reuters news agency, the weapons that have been turned over thus far are only illicit weapons that were brought into the camp in the last day. Reuters was unable to confirm the kind of weapons being turned in, but television video showed military trucks within the camp.

The program comes after Lebanon agreed to a US-backed ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in November that limited the use of firearms to six state security units. Israel has been invading Lebanon ever since the truce agreement on November 27, 2024, frequently once a week.
