LONDON: As Beirut looks for diplomatic ways to put an end to the rising tensions along the border between the two nations, work has allegedly started in Lebanon to put up a team that might represent the nation in future conversations with Israel.
The L’Orient-Le Jour daily stated on Thursday that discussions within the Lebanese leadership are apparently centered on the makeup of a team that would comprise military, diplomatic, and technological professionals in addition to representatives of the Christian community.
According to political sources cited in the piece, the efforts to organize a delegation come as talks increase between Lebanese officials and international partners over the format and location of negotiations with Israeli authorities.
The idea of holding the negotiations in Cyprus is under consideration. With an emphasis on reaching a comprehensive peace agreement and resolving unresolved issues between the two nations, such negotiations would probably be conducted under international sponsorship.
In addition to addressing more general concerns related to security arrangements and outstanding territory disputes, Lebanese officials have stated that the main goal would be to stop Israeli military actions and stabilize border areas.
