Maintaining Diplomacy to "Contain crisis" in Syria, According to the Iraqi Prime Minister

BAGHDAD: Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, Iraq’s prime minister, stated Friday that his nation was focusing its diplomatic efforts on “containing the crisis in Syria due to its clear impact on Iraqi security. His comments preceded a meeting of the senior diplomats from Tehran, Damascus, and Baghdad to address the situation in Syria, which has been engulfed in a stunning onslaught in which terrorists have taken control of important cities from the government.

About five kilometers outside of Homs, Syria’s third-largest city and a former hotbed of anti-government demonstrations, were Islamist-led combatants.

Sudani confirmed Friday that “Iraq is continuing intensive diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis in Syria due to its clear impact on Iraqi security” during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Sudani added, “Iraq’s official, fixed stance is in support of Syria’s unity, security, and stability,” his office said in a statement. The two ministers stressed “the importance of continuing consultation and coordination between the two countries to avoid the repetition of previous experiences and to work to protect regional security.”
Sabbagh pointed to “the necessity of mobilizing Arab and regional efforts to counter this terrorist threat… and prevent it from moving to other countries,” according to the official Syrian news agency SANA.
