Palestinian health officials reported on Wednesday that at least fifty Palestinians have died as a result of Israeli airstrikes over Gaza in the previous 24 hours. The military claimed that forces were still targeting militants and seizing weapons and ammunition.
Jets struck some 30 targets in the Gaza Strip, including tunnels, launch pads, and an observation post, according to the Israeli military, as desperate diplomatic attempts to end the 10-month-old conflict between Israel and Hamas resumed.
According to the report, soldiers killed numerous armed combatants and took weaponry, including as automatic rifles, grenades, and explosives.
In the densely populated Deir Al-Balah neighborhood in central Gaza, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who have been displaced by the fighting have found refuge, the IDF has issued more orders for evacuation.
Following the evacuation orders—which the military said as necessary to remove civilians from what had turned into “a dangerous combat zone”—at least one person was killed and several others were injured by machine gun fire, according to medics and locals.
As US Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded his most recent trip to the Middle East, the fighting continued without any indication that a settlement to stop it was imminent.
