How Israeli Land Grabs Are Changing the Map of Palestine’s Jordan Valley

LONDON: Tubas, a Palestinian governorate in the western Jordan Valley in the northern West Bank, is used to Israeli raids. However, after land seizure orders for a proposed barrier known as the “Scarlet Thread” were issued in November, concerns about de-facto annexation have grown.

On November 26, Israeli security forces blocked off the governorate and invaded Tubas City and neighboring communities, including Tammun, Aqqaba, Tayasir, and Wadi Al-Fara, which are home to over 58,000 people, with the help of a helicopter that allegedly opened fire.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA, the operation included drones, airplanes, bulldozers, and curfews. According to OCHA, homes and infrastructure suffered significant damage, and at least 160 Palestinians were hurt. In addition to displacing locals, the attacks interfered with vital services, including water supplies. OCHA said that Israeli troops detained and questioned dozens of Palestinians before leaving the Al-Fara refugee camp, seizing at least ten residential buildings and causing at least 20 families to flee.

Except for one, 29 young men were held in the camp until being freed, according to the Palestinian Detainees’ Affairs Society. The operation was characterized by Israeli military and internal security officials as a component of a larger “counterterrorism” campaign.
