Gunmen Attacked a Nigerian Village, Killing up to 40 People

According to Amnesty International, armed men invaded a rural village in Nigeria’s northeastern Taraba State, killing up to 40 people, however state police reported a lower death toll of 25. The attack took place between Friday evening and Saturday morning in Binnari community, Karim-Lamido Local Government Area, when gunmen attacked the village and opened fire on civilians.

Amnesty International stated Saturday evening that at least 40 people had been killed, while the Taraba State government confirmed 25 deaths on Sunday. Independent verification of the disputed figures was not possible immediately.

The attackers reportedly stole food, cash, and motorcycles before burning down houses and shops, causing survivors to flee to neighbouring settlements. The attack has raised new concerns about security in Taraba State’s rural areas, where communities have been targeted by armed groups on numerous occasions.

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas condemned the deaths on Sunday, urging security forces to step up efforts to safeguard communities and bring those responsible to account. After criticizing the state government’s handling of insecurity, the governor’s reelection campaign council issued a separate statement urging lawmakers not to use the tragedy for political gain.

Amnesty International demanded an impartial investigation into the attack, justice for those guilty, and stronger steps to safeguard vulnerable groups from future attacks. The deaths underline Nigeria’s ongoing security issues, with armed groups carrying out attacks, kidnappings, and killings in multiple regions.
