RIYADH: At a gathering in Riyadh on Tuesday, officials and nuclear specialists talked about South Korea and Saudi Arabia’s collaboration in nuclear energy and defense. About 80 people attended the first Korea-Gulf collaboration Council collaboration seminar to talk about regional problems in the Middle East, trade relations, and energy sector cooperation. According to Choi Byung-hyuk, South Korea’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, the seminar is a good opportunity to talk about economic cooperation, reach a consensus on regional conflicts in the GCC, particularly those involving Gaza and the Red Sea, and expand energy cooperation in the nuclear and renewables sectors.
South Korea and Saudi Arabia are now working together on a joint research project on tiny modular reactors, according to Kang Han-ok, vice president for SMART development at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. “In the global power supply sector, SMRs are being highlighted as carbon-zero energy sources that complement the intermittent nature of renewable energy,” Kang stated.
He mentioned how Seoul’s nuclear authority in September approved the SMART100 SMR, which was co-designed by South Korean and Saudi companies. The Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Corp., King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy, and KAERI collaborated to develop the reactor. According to Kang, the reactor is now prepared for international export. “SMART is now prepared for worldwide deployment in the demand of the power and thermal energy sectors thanks to its SDA acquaintance,” he stated.
